The doors of Notre-Dame have finally reopened after years of extensive restoration. While it is exciting to step inside again, you must navigate a complex schedule because the cathedral serves as both a historic monument and an active place of worship. Many visitors mistakenly assume the doors are open 24/7, but arriving late often means encountering a locked entrance.
Standard Cathedral Opening Hours
The main floor of the cathedral, which includes the nave, transept, and chapels, is generally open every day of the year:
- Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM – 6:45 PM.
- Saturday and Sunday: 8:00 AM – 7:15 PM.
Tower and Crypt Schedules
It is vital to remember that the towers and the crypt operate under entirely different organizations and hours than the main church.
The Tower Hours (Managed by Centre des Monuments Nationaux):
- April to September: 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM (with late openings until 11:00 PM on summer Fridays and Saturdays).
- October to March: 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM.
- Last Entry Rule: You must arrive at least 45 minutes before closing to be admitted.
The Archaeological Crypt Hours:
- Tuesday to Sunday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM.
- Monday: Closed.
Impact of Religious Services
Because Mass is held daily, your access to specific areas like the choir may be restricted during service times. You are welcome to visit during these hours, but you must remain quiet and refrain from using flash photography.
- Weekday Mass Times: Typically 8:00 AM, 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 6:15 PM.
- Sunday Mass Times: 8:30 AM, 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM (International), 12:45 PM, and 6:30 PM.
Holiday and Special Event Adjustments
While the cathedral remains open on major holidays like Christmas and Easter, these are the busiest times of the year. On May 1st (Labor Day), the cathedral stays open, but the towers and crypt are frequently closed. Always check the official website on the morning of your visit, as state funerals or special ceremonies can change these hours without much notice.
