Is There a “Light Show” at Notre Dame?

You have likely seen the videos on TikTok featuring a cathedral illuminated with lasers, pumping orchestral music, and a ceiling turning into a starry night. Naturally, you want to book tickets for this experience in Paris. However, you should stop for a moment, as you are likely looking for the entirely wrong city.

The “Aura” Light Show is in Montreal

The famous viral “Notre-Dame Light Show” is actually called AURA. Crucially, it takes place at the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, Canada, and does not happen in Paris. While Paris is a Cathedral, Montreal features a Basilica with different architecture. Therefore, if you book tickets for “Aura,” you will unintentionally be buying a flight to Quebec.

Does Paris Offer a Similar Light Show?

Notably, Notre-Dame de Paris does not feature a permanent indoor laser show like the one in Montreal. Because it remains a stricter religious site, the cathedral maintains a more traditional atmosphere. Nevertheless, Paris offers two excellent alternatives that use technology to bring the cathedral to life.

1. The “Eternal Notre-Dame” VR Experience

This is currently the closest thing Paris has to a high-tech light show. Specifically, it is an immersive Virtual Reality expedition.

  • What is it?: You wear a VR headset and a backpack while walking through a physical space. Consequently, you see the cathedral being built in the Middle Ages, walk on the roof, and even meet the architect.
  • Location: You can find this at the “Cité de l’Histoire” in La Défense, which is only a short metro ride from the cathedral.
  • Cost: Tickets typically cost approximately 30 Euros.

2. The “Dame de Cœur” (Occasional Event)

In the past, the city hosted a projection show called “Dame de Cœur” on the facade of the cathedral. However, this was a temporary event rather than a nightly occurrence. Therefore, you should check the official 2026 calendar to see if it has returned for a special holiday run.

The Ultimate Free Light Show: The Sunset

The best light show in Paris is actually free. You should go to the interior of Notre-Dame at sunset, which occurs around 5:00 PM in winter or 9:00 PM in summer. At this time, the sun hits the Great Rose Windows, causing beams of red and blue light to cut through the incense smoke. Ultimately, this natural experience is silent and often far more impressive than any laser show.
