Guiding the people at Notre dame

A Guide to Visiting Notre Dame in 2026

A Radiant New Interior

The most striking change for 2026 visitors is the overwhelming sense of light. Years of meticulous cleaning have removed centuries of candle smoke and grime, restoring the stone to its original, “immaculate” creamy blonde color. This bright stone provides a dramatic backdrop for the cleaned and restored stained-glass windows, which now feature more vibrant blues and reds. Additionally, the side chapels have been refreshed to showcase their vivid, original colors.

Entry Rules and Ticket Procedures

While the cathedral maintains its tradition of free entry to the main nave, a modernized system manages high visitor demand.

  • Main Floor (Nave): Admission remains free of charge.
  • Reservation System: A free online reservation system is available through the official Notre-Dame de Paris website (notredamedeparis.fr) or mobile app. Time slots typically open 48 hours (2 days) in advance, with some additional slots released just a few hours before the entry time.
  • Walk-ins: You can still enter without a reservation, but expect significant wait times, sometimes stretching to two or three hours during peak periods.
  • Ticketed Areas: Climbing the Towers, visiting the Treasury, and entering the Archaeological Crypt under the square require separate, paid tickets.

The Reconstructed Spire

The iconic 96-meter spire has been fully reconstructed as an exact replica using traditional carpentry and original materials. All 16 copper statues of the apostles and evangelists, which were spared from the 2019 fire after being removed for separate restoration just days earlier, have been returned to their original positions at the base of the spire.

Crowd Control and Planning

The cathedral currently hosts approximately 35,000 visitors daily.

  • Best Time: Aim for early morning (it opens around 7:45 or 8:00 AM) or Thursday evenings when hours are extended until 10:00 PM.
  • Security: Prepare for airport-style security checks, including metal detectors. Large bags, suitcases, and oversized luggage are strictly forbidden as there is no cloakroom.
  • Forecourt: The square in front (Parvis) has been revitalized to include more greenery and is set to be further redesigned.

Digital and Interactive Features

A new museum experience utilizes the official app and on-site digital guides. Visitors can use the HistoPad, an augmented reality tablet, to explore 850 years of history, including a look at how the medieval wooden roof structure, known as “The Forest,” appeared before the 2019 fire.

Respecting the Space

As an active place of worship, traditional etiquette is strictly enforced:

  • Dress Code: Modest attire is mandatory; shoulders and knees must be covered.
  • Silence: Maintain a peaceful atmosphere and keep conversations low; phone calls are not permitted inside.
  • Photography: While photography is allowed, flash, tripods, and filming equipment are forbidden to preserve the artwork and respect worshippers.
