Many visitors mistakenly assume the cathedral and the towers are the same attraction, but they are actually managed by two different organizations with unique rules. Because they have different doors and operating hours, failing to know the difference might result in seeing the church but missing the spectacular view.
The Cathedral (The Church)

- Entrance: You can enter through the three main portals on the West Facade.

The Towers (The View)
- Management: This area is managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (Government).
- Cost: A paid ticket is required, costing approximately 10–13 Euros.
- Entrance: The entrance is located around the corner on the North side at Rue du Cloître Notre-Dame.
- Hours: Operation begins later at 10:00 AM and ends earlier, usually between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM.
- Booking: Reservations are mandatory; consequently, you must use the “Je File” app or booking terminals to select a time slot.
The Crucial Gap in Timing
Furthermore, you should notice the significant time difference between the two. While the church opens at 8:00 AM, the towers do not open until 10:00 AM. Consequently, if you arrive at 8:30 AM planning to climb immediately, you will be forced to wait for 90 minutes.
Additionally, be aware that the towers often close for lunch or safety reasons. If weather conditions become windy or icy, the towers close immediately even though the church remains open.
Strict Bag Rules
- Cathedral: Small backpacks are generally okay, though they will be checked.
- Towers: No bags are allowed because the stairs are too narrow. Because there are no lockers available, you cannot climb if you are carrying a suitcase or large hiking pack.
Accessibility Comparison
- Cathedral: The main floor is wheelchair accessible with ramps available.
- Towers: This section is not accessible. Since there is no elevator, visitors must climb 400 physically strenuous spiral stone steps.
The Ideal Strategy
To maximize your time, you should book your Tower slot first for 10:00 AM. Afterward, plan to visit the Cathedral early by arriving at 9:00 AM to walk the interior for an hour. Finally, exit and head to the Tower entrance to arrive exactly on time for your scheduled slot.
Why are they separate?
Ultimately, the church remains a place of worship while the towers are preserved as a historical monument. Keeping them separate allows people to pray in peace while tourists enjoy the climb. Therefore, you should treat them as two separate visits and plan accordingly.
